The estate and the wine |
|
|
A true master of Grenache in all its nuances, Dominique Ay is a leading figure in Gigondas, now seamlessly succeeded by his children, Anne-Sophie and Christophe. Today, their Domaine Raspail-Ay stands at the pinnacle of the appellation, crafting wines of remarkable complexity and finesse, among the very best in Gigondas.
The estate’s high-altitude terroir—19 hectares in a single contiguous parcel, with vines averaging 60 years old—preserves a vital freshness, while extended aging in large wooden vats followed by concrete tanks refines the structure. The result is a wine of power, depth, and expressive fruit, built for long aging.
With only one Gigondas wine produced per vintage, this estate operates on an allocation-only basis, crafting what is undoubtedly one of the finest age-worthy wines of the appellation. |

A flawless success, the 2022 Red Gigondas is a benchmark for the appellation. The nose is both ripe and fresh, with notes of myrtle, rose, and stone fruits, showcasing the expressive Grenache at its most seductive and sun-kissed, enhanced by delicate peppery nuances. On the palate, the balance is masterful—fruit purity and ripeness are perfectly managed, with a refined texture that transcends its natural richness. The tannins are precise, elegant, and remarkably fine, giving the wine both immediate appeal and long-term potential. With all the hallmarks of a great aging wine, this Gigondas will evolve beautifully over ten years or more. Rated 95/100 by the Selection Committee. |
