The tasting
Palate This wine is part of a private collection that has been stored in optimal temperature and hygrometry conditions. Each bottle was appraised by our Master Sommelier and has been very carefully handled by the entire Ventealapropriete team right up to its delivery. This bottle is rare and ephemeral, the result of a long, patient evolution. There can be no exchanges or returns once it has been opened or consumed. Enjoy your tasting!
The sommelier's advice
Temperature Serve between 16-18°C. Due to the presence of a deposit, a decanting from one bottle to another may be necessary to further enhance the drinking enjoyment.
Food Red meats and mushrooms, grilled beef flank steaks, risotto with woodland mushrooms in a rich brown jus, black truffle dishes and a cheese platter that ideally includes some farmhouse Saint-Nectaire.

The estate and the wine
The estate and the wine The Château Gruaud-Larose wine estate was originally known as "Fondebeau" or "Gruaud". In 1781, an heir to the property, Jean-Sébastien de Larose, then added his name to it. One of its owners, Baron Jean-Auguste Sarget, adopted the motto "the king of wines, the wine of kings" for the precious liquid. In the 17th century, Château Gruaud Larose's wine sold at a price barely lower than that of Lafite Rothschild, Latour or Margaux. In 1935, Désiré Cordier acquired Château Gruaud-Larose to return it to its original configuration. The Merlaut family has been running this historic estate in Saint-Julien since 1997.
Wine Château Gruaud Larose 1998 showed astringent tannins in its early life, then broadened its mid-palate and the tannins became softer and more smoothly integrated. Intense notes of cherry liqueur, blackcurrants, smoke, dried herbs and leather made up its aromatic palette. Very well located, the vineyard sits on a plateau of deep, perfectly uniform gravel in the southern part of the commune of Saint-Julien, where the vines thrive. In the 80s and 90s, it was known for its powerful wines with ripe, medium to full flavours, good balance and harmony, coupled with a soft, melted oak. 1998 is a great year and among the most classic vintages.
Vinification Harvested by hand, 18 months' ageing in oak barrels, 80% of which are new.
