The history of Vienne wines started in 1996, when Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard decided to replant some vines in the ancient Seyssuel vineyard area, on the left bank of the Rhône, upstream from Vienne. Under the Sotanum brand, the wine, sold as "vin de pays des collines rhodaniennes" was an immediate hit. The venture took a radical turn from 2002, with the arrival of Pierre Jean Villa. The Vienne wines now come from 18 hectares of vineyard property.
